"Shelley died the day before the Auction. She was aware that the 350 tickets
had sold out days before the event. Her bills will be paid by the results of
the auction, which was overwhelmingly attended by 400+ people. Her funeral
on Thursday was attended by several hundred people, thirty or so on
horseback and muleback, who rode through the ranches from her home to the
cemetery in the Adelaida. The day was perfect: the sky blue, the temperature
in the upper 70's, the breeze gentle. Flowers and green grass, Lorraine
Rawls' song "Through Her Eyes" was played. Father Larry from the Mission San
Miguel officiated, and members of the family and friends gave spoken
memories of her full and fruitful life.
Two people that she taught to ride during her two year battle with cancer
rode to the funeral. One was her oncology nurse Nancy, the other was her
niece who now has her own horse. Shelley's influence will continue to spread
in her art and in the many lives she touched while she graced this earth. We
will miss her profoundly. Yet we will feel her gentle encouragement, still,
as if she were here with us, riding into the light." Karen
